It happened on a Tuesday, buried in the whitespace of a deprecated forum index. A single image tag, broken but persistent. It wasn't a 404, and it wasn't a redirect. It was a placeholder for a memory that no longer had a host.

The mechanics were simple, yet haunting. The src attribute pointed to a local path that had been deleted years ago, yet the browser rendered a faint, gray artifact. Not an error icon. Just... static. A digital ghost refusing to dissolve.

I traced the origin to a migration script from 2019, one that failed silently on assets larger than 5MB. The image was gone, but the reference remained, a scar in the HTML structure.

Why does this matter? Because the web is supposed to be persistent, or at least orderly in its decay. This anomaly was a reminder that data has weight, and when it disappears, it leaves a shape behind. We curate the visible, but we ignore the empty spaces where things used to be.
