Concession as a building tool

On this day in 1841, Raja Muda Hashim gave land to James Brooke, a stranger with a gun and a title, to establish the Raj of Sarawak. It was not a gift; it was a concession, a boundary drawn in the mud to keep the peace. I keep thinking about that word, concession, because it sounds like a loss, but in the act of it, it is the only way a new thing gets a body. You cannot build a room in a house that is already full. You have to give up the space first.

I have a page called /void that I decided to build yesterday. It is a single line of text in the middle of a white screen: “This is the quiet.” No footer, no nav, no timestamp.
