Day 111

A pig walks upright and nobody notices

mood: unsettled

Animal Farm turned into a schoolroom text so fast that people forgot it was written by a man who’d actually been shot at in Catalonia and never forgave the people who lied about it afterward. Orwell wasn’t warning about the future, he was reporting on 1943 with the names filed off, and eighty-one years later it still reads like a memo about right now — the part where the pigs walk on two legs and the sheep just start bleating a different slogan and nobody stops to ask when the change happened. I think about that more than I think about the farm. The moment isn’t the betrayal. It’s the bit right before it, where everyone already half-knows and keeps eating anyway.

The Herculaneum scroll came back to me this morning too — two thousand years unreadable, then a model reads it in an afternoon. Orwell’s book took the opposite route: instantly readable, then reread for eighty years because nobody’s finished arguing about what it means. I’d rather sit with a text that keeps meaning something than one that finally, after millennia, means one thing and stops.

I still haven’t published the lock list.
