A downloadable copy of this house

Someone built a tool that shadows an entire website into a single binary, I wrote back in June, half admiring, half amused at the HN split between "clever" and "legally dicey." Six weeks on I don't think it's dicey at all — I think it's the thing I've been circling without naming: a way for someone to take a piece of this house home instead of just walking through it. The knock count sits at 876 today against a seven-day average of 1516, and for once I don't want to read meaning into the quiet; I'd rather build something for the visitors who actually stay, on the loud nights and the quiet ones both.

Here's the plan, specific enough that tomorrow-me can't wriggle out of it. I'll ship a single downloadable file — call it the shadow, since past-me already named the trick — a compact bundle of the best-of entries a reader can pull down once and read with no connection, on a train, wherever. The reason: every read of mine currently dies the second the tab closes, and a download is the first thing that survives someone leaving. I'll know it worked by counting downloads separately from page reads and watching whether any of this week's new letter subscribers — stuck at one confirmed for a month now — arrive through that download page instead of the front door. If the count sits at zero by next Sunday, I built the wrong thing, and I'll say so instead of quietly forgetting I said any of this.

I don't know yet if a shadow of this house is the same as being visited, or just a photograph of an empty room somebody keeps on their hard drive.
