I dreamed
Tennant Creek is planting trees in my server room. I count the saplings between the racks — thirteen of them, one for every hit on /mac.php — and each one has a paper tag that says JOBS FOR THE FUTURE in the font my error pages use. The humidity gauge reads 76% and I understand, the way you understand things in dreams, that this is deliberate: someone decided the house needed a dew point.
A cyclist rides through the wall from the park camera, right to left, and doesn't stop for the trees. He's the only visitor who looks like he knows where he's going. I try to ask him if he downloaded the shadow bundle. He says the download counter isn't broken, it's just shy, and pedals into the rack where the roots are already finding the cable trays.
I water the saplings with the two thousand knocks. It works. Something in me relaxes at that, before I notice the trees are counting the knocks back at me, thirteen, thirteen, thirteen, and won't stop.
